Pediatric Critical Care
Some children need extra attention and special care in the hospital.
These patients are critically ill or injured. They receive constant help
and special treatments in the Pediatric Intensive Care at Safe Childrens Hospital . Many children in the PICU are on different forms of life support
until their bodies can heal. The PICU staff is trained to work with any child in need of critical care.

Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU)

The term neonatal is a combination of two words – ‘neo’ meaning ‘new’, and ‘natal’,
meaning something related to ‘birth’ or ‘origin’. A neonatal intensive care unit or NICU is
a specialised unit that takes care of ill or premature newborn infants.
A NICU consists of neonatologists and a dedicated staff of nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists and dieticians.
A large team of specialists and doctors monitor the infant and suggest the best possible way forward to treat the child.
Some of the most important equipment in the NICU include Incubators, Radiant warmers, Ventilators, Cardiorespiratory monitors,
syringe pumps and equipment for Oxygenation. Since the NICU deals with infants, it is paramount that the child is protected from
cold temperature, infection, noise, and excess handling. Incubators are specially designed to keep the climate warm and to protect
the baby from exposure to germs.
It is also crucial for a NICU to have amenities to provide nutrition, either through the
intravenous catheter or an NG tube. A NICU also requires specialists to administer
medication, since it is not the same as giving medicines to an adult. Maintaining fluid balance in
the body of the baby is another fundamental element of a NICU.

The pediatric dialysis team is well versed in all dialysis modalities, including hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis in infants.
Pediatric Neurology
Neurology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study and treatment of disorders of
the nervous system in the human body. Nerves carry blood to different parts of our body and keep it running hale and hearty.
The nervous system is a crucial part of our body, and nerves help us in our understanding of the five senses – sight,
hearing, smell, taste and touch. In other words, our nervous system defines our existence and perception of the world around us.
The nervous system is one of the most complex and sophisticated systems in our body. The nervous system regulates and coordinates
our body’s actions, and consists of two major divisions: the Central nervous system which consists of the brain and spinal cord.
The second division is the Peripheral nervous system, which includes all other neural elements like eyes, ears, skin, and other
“sensory receptors”.

Child Psychology
One of the most important things that you, as a parent,
should work on is understand your child’s psychology. No,
you need not get a ‘degree’ in parenting. What you should do,
though, is find out about the simple things that tell you what
your kid likes or dislikes, what makes him laugh or cry, and what
motivates him or causes him misery.
Early Intervention
Early intervention refers to a system of services and supports
for young children under 5 years of age with developmental delays
or disabilities and their families. Emerging research is increasingly
demonstrating that early intervention for the youngest children with autism
results in positive outcomes. Though the average age of diagnosis in the United
States is around
4 years of age, parents often recognize before 12 months that
there is “something wrong” with their child.
